2004-2005 Season: Making Tracks
A Note from the Composer
When I was young, all I ever wanted was to be a rock star. Since that hasn’t happened yet (I’m still waiting), I grabbed the chance to compose the rock musical Making Tracks. Personally, it was very exciting for me, especially since Welly insisted that the music be contemporary and ROCKING. I asked, “Does that mean I can have loud guitars and stuff?” He answered a resounding “Yes!” and the rest is history. There was one problem though–I had never been involved in musical theater before. So I asked yet another question: “Can I just do whatever I’m comfortable with?” Another resounding “Yes!” coupled with developing the musical eventually brought us to this: Making Tracks.
We wanted to celebrate all the different styles of music (jazz, rock, R&B/gospel, classical, and the music of different cultures) that have influenced and shaped us. Since the spirit of Making Tracks is one of contrast and change—both cultural and historical—I wanted to take this opportunity to make the music of today and everywhere. We have included traditional Asian instruments (including the yang-qin, kayageum, and shakuhachi) to pay homage to our ancestry, which are interwoven with today’s modern sounds. We hope you enjoy the music as much as we have enjoyed bringing Making Tracks to life.
