Volunteer playshop assistants are needed to help facilitate our Children’s Creative Playshop Series. Creative Playshops are for kids ages 6 to 12 and are held in the Rep's upstairs studio theatre during the Saturday matinee performances of every San Jose Rep production. Led by a San Jose Repertory Theatre professional, these Playshops will explore the imagination through interactive theater activities related to the themes of the main stage show. Parents can drop their kids off before the show, enjoy the performance and pick them up afterwards. They receive a brochure detailing the content of the workshop and offering ideas for additional related activities that can be done at home.

Volunteer playshop assistants are encouraged to read the scripts for a play and participate in the development of the activities and games for the lesson plan if desired. This is a truly wonderful experience that allows you to createtheater with some amazing kids. Volunteers are able to earn vouchers to be able to see the main stage productions.

Volunteer requirements

Age: 14 years and older.

Dress Code: casual, comfortable attire.

Training: training for playshop assistants is offered on an individual basis, though periodically group workshops are scheduled to facilitate training.  Volunteers can participate in the development of the activities and themes for each production prior to a performance shift and be sufficiently trained in the lesson plan at that time. For volunteers that are unavailable to participate in lesson planning, an orientation for the activities of a playshop will be given at the start of a shift.

Time commitment: Volunteers are being sought to assist with playshops during Saturday matinee performances. Shifts start at 2:00 PM on performance Saturdays. The length of the shift is dependant upon the running time of the show, and typically ranges between 2.5-3 hours. We ask that volunteers commit to working at least one playshop for each of our seven main stage productions during the season. Additional shifts are available for those that want to do more.
